ST. MATTHEW'S ANNIVERSARY.

OPENED SIXTY-NINE YEARS AGO. The Anglican Church of St. Matthew's celebrated its sixty-ninth anniversary yesterday. Dr. A. \V. Avcriil, Bishop of Auckland, preached in the morning, and the vicar. Rev. C. Grant Canon, at night, Tlie latter touched upon the past history of the church which, he said, was first opened in a small schoolroom on the site of the present building. Tho late Sir Alfred Cad man and also the Hon. Sir Edwin Mitchelson were connected with St. Matthew's, the latter having attended the day school there. St. Matthew's; was constituted a separate parish under | the Rev. F. Thatcher, who later went to ! England and collected _a_of>. which, with | money raised locally at various time*, | formed the nucleus of the stone church fund, which when it had reached £*15,000 was utilised to put up the present building. The other vicars during the 69 years were: Revs. D. Jones. R. S. Has-I sard. W. Tebbs. L. H. Outram. L. Fitzgerald. W. E. Gillam, and C. H. Grant I Cowen. During the time Mr. Hassard | was in charge the church of St. Thomas was built in Freeman's Ray. Both services were attended by large conirregations yesterday, and appropriate music was provided under the organist, Mr. J. H. Phillpot.
