FALLING SCHOOL FIGURES.
THE LOSS OF A TEACHER. POSITION AT BERESFORD STREET. , A falling-off i n the attendance of the Bereeford Street School having occasioned the lose of a teacher, the City ' j Schools Committee had before it a' 1 table of figures of the attendances r at the three schools under its jurisdiction for the purpose of comparison be- ( tweun the periods when a truant inspec- < tor overlooked the altendame last year , and when there was no eiieh officer tliis j year. The figures showed: Napivr Street. | 559 (r>o4) and ")ii.") dil.Ti: Beresford ! Street, lil.i (ii:io) a nd r>Bo Nelson ' Street. 467 (oli) and 494 (.i22), the • figures in parenthervs those of the L roll numbers and the others showing the ' ' average attendance. In each caee the | ' first set of figurve referred to last year. | and the second set this year, and they j , proved to be inconclusive as to the effect '« of the truant officer's servkvs. for the I ' average attendance at Napier Street School h;ul -remained about the same in relation to thk- roll number: that at j Nekon Street School had rather improved since the abolition of the inspector; while at the Beresford Strevt School the average attendance had fallen away in a marked fashion since last year. Against this the hvadmaster of Nelson ' Street School reported that although the attendance at his school had improved I thta year he was personally aware of three or four families whose children ( were very irregular in attendance since < the truant officer's disappearance from -' the seenv. i The committee decided, in view of thfi ; position at the Beresford Street School, j 1 to urge thy Education Board to bring | i more pressure to bear on parents in the i matter of school attendance, intimating i at the same time that it di<l not favour ' visits by the police for thy purpose, and 1 felt that the influence of a tactful truant 1 officer was decidedly in the interests i of the schools and the children. ] , f
