OBITUARY.

VETERAN OF MAORI WAR. The death of Mr. Stephen Earl at Tauranga on Monday remover, anoth.r veteran of the Maori war. Deceased had reached the great age of 92 years. He was a native of Norfolk, England. In tho early days of the Australian gold- j fields, about seventy-one years ago, Mr. Earl was early on the spot. lie followed the gold for some years, and was afterward* farming in the Geelong district. Whil. in Australia he joined the Ist Waikatos, and landed at Auckland in 1803. He was connected with the Commissariat Transport Corps between Auckland and the Waikato. Later ho was drafted with hi. company to Tauranga, and took part in the lights in the Whakamarama district. At the conclusion of tiie war Mr. Earl livvui some time at Gate Pa. but subsequently' took up his military grant of hind at Aongatetc. Twenty years ago he moved to Whangarei. and seven years ago went back to Tauranga. Decvased was a member of the first Road Board in Tauranga district. He al_o took keen interest in getting schools. Mr. Earl was only bodridden ton days before his death. He is survived by his wife, live sons, and four daughters. Messrs. Edward and Stephen Earl reside at Aongat.te, Mr. AValtcr Karl at Waihi, Mr. Ceorpc Earl at Tauranga. and Mr. Frederick Earl at Te Aroha. The daughter- am Me.dames | Clear and J.. Robinson (Tauranga), A. Comes (Waihi), and J. Til-ley (Thames).
