OBITUARY.
MR. EDWARD J. MAGEE. There passed away, on the 12th inst., cue of the oldest settlers of the Hokiar.ga district, in th e person of Mr. Edward John Magee, of One. Mr. Magee wa s born in the County Tyrone, Ireland, over !'0 years ago. " Shortly after his marriage he ca.tJe to New Zealand in the sailing ship Waitangi (her maiden voyage to this country). He landed here in 1574, and. being a teacher by profession, obtained a position -,n the Btt fi" of the Reresford Street Schi }1 in\ Auckland. From there he went to Kaiwaka, a-- head teacher. After some time he wer.t to Australia, and engaged in teaching in Victoria. Arriving again in New Zca'and he was appointed to the first Board school in Rawe-:e. Hokianga. The corditions at that time must hare been of a vrry primitive nature, as is shown by the fact that the "bell" in use was an old kerosene tin. Mr. Magee ■was .n charge at Rawene for about two years, then he was transferred to Omap"re. There he staved for about eight years and again shifted to Mangnknhia. From this school ]■" retired to live on his property at One s.bout -10 years ago. Of a qiret. Itnas.surr.illg nature. Mr. Magee was highly rc-peetcd by all who came in contact with him. and" well liked. He leaves behind him his widow and a grown-up family. He had thro.' Pons and three daughters and f jttrteen grandchildren. The funeral, which took pbec on Kridav. l-!i'i inst.. was an elnouent tribute to the high respect in which the deceased and his family are heid in the district where they "nave lived so long. Rev. Father Becker held a short but. Impressive service at the Catholic Chape], and then the remains were taken to the Rawene Cemetery. MR. JOHN HARTWELL. Mr. John Hartwell. well known in (musical circle? in Auckland for many ?ears past, died peacefully during his eieep yesterday morning at his residence in Onewa Street. Xo-thcnte. Deceased came from the Channel Islands, and after residing at Ponsonby settled at Xorthcote, where he was an old identity. He was associated for many years with the examinations in connection with the Trinity College at Auckland. For twelve years decea-ed was organist at St. Patrick's Cathedral, Auckland, when Mr. P. F. Hiscocks was choir master. Mr. Hartwell was a memiier of various musical organisations in Auckland, including the Choral Society. He had also composed both sacred and secular musical items of merit. Mrs. Hartwell predeceased him twelve years ago. The married members of the family reside at Hokianga and Great Barrier, and Miss Mary Hartwell at Xorthcote. Deceased fcad suffered from heart affection. j
