MORE POWER FROM COAL
WASTE IN COMBUSTION. L'nder present conditions there is immense loss of power in the method of combustion prevailing in the burning of coal. The United States Bureau of Mines has estimated that the preventable waste of power units that pass up the chimneys of industrial plants in America amounts to the vast sum of 700,000 dollars per annum. It is also calculated that another 350,000 dollars is wasted in household consumption of I coal. Six hundred pounds of American coal of standard quality contains enough heat units to produce 1000 horsepower in steam in one hour, if all of it could be utilised. Examination of power plants shows the average is 10,0001b of coal burned to produce 1000 horse-power. The bulk of the wastage is due to imperfect combustion. The control of the proper volume of air is absolutely necessary for economy in coal consumption. Already in the L'nited States a fuelsaving device has been adopted which it is claimed goes far to secure the combustion of the maximum heat units available in the coal. This has reduced coal consumption 25 per cent.
