SOUTH-EAST STORM.

SEA AND WIND MODERATED. BAROMETER ESPECIALLY HIGH. A general improvement in the weather has been observed on the east coast and throughout the Auckland Peninsula during the past two days, and it is understood that the sea outside is rapidly moderating with the abatement of the gale that blew with such force earlier in the week.

The Makura, which was in the full force of the strong south-easter on the way from Suva, arrived yesterday afternoon after a most unpleasant experience. During the worst of the storm she was travelling very slow and was pitching in the disturbed sea, spray frequently breaking on deck. Although the officers on board the steamer were not -.villing to Rive details of their experience it is understood that some damage was caused to the steamer, including two iron doors being stove in on the port side and a eompanionway being carried away. The Makura has been an oil burning steamer for the past two years or so, and this is the first time she has been late in her arrival from Vancouver. At Auckland the barometer is now higher than it has been for a fortnight, and since Thursday there has been a continual rise, which was particularly rapid this morning, and by 1 p.m. the reading was 30.. 0 inches. " This is one inch higher than last Saturday, when the glass was noticeably low. Last night another frost was experienced in many of the rural aburbs, though at Albert Park, where the weather observations are taken Ly Mr. Burnett, the minimum temperature on the srass was only 37 5 inches. At 9 a.m. the temperature of the air was 49 degrees.
