MEMORIAL TO FALUEN SCHOLARS. UNVKILED BY THE MAYOR. The tcromony of unveiling a mcmori.il of carved oak. in memory of the pa.-t pupils of the Nulsun Street Sihoo: who fell during the war. wa< performed at the school yesterday afternoon. There ■were pre.-ent the Mayor. Mr. J. H. Gunson, members of the Education Board, and the School Committee and the teachin? stall and the children of the school. Mr. Gunson, who wa.= introduced by the headmaster. Mr. J, ft. Ramsay, unveiled the memoria.l and made reference to the fine appearance of the boys and girls attending tlie school. }lc also referred to the former boy? of the school •who went away to the front during the war. -A number of these did not return, paying the supreme sacrifice, and it was for this reason that the memorial was raised. They should feel n deep debt of gratitude for the service rendered by the men who went to the front. He wished to mention three names particularly of •which the school should be proud. He referred to Lieut.-Commander Sanders, V.C., who went to Standards 1, 2, 3, and 4 of the school. Lieut.-Colonel J. N. McCarroll. and Lieut. Tilsev, D.C.M.
Mr. E. C. Purdie, secretary to the Education Board, said that 35 years ago he ■was a teacher at the school, and no doubt a number of the pupils under him at that particular time went to the front. He exhorted the children present not to forpet the great service rendered riy the pupils in the war, and to try and follow in their footsteps in serving their country in peace.
Mr. A. C. A. Sexton, vice-president of the Auckland Returned Soldiers Association, also referred to the sacrifice made by the past pupils of the school, many of "whom he worked with in camp and trench for a number of years.
