RUGBY FOOTBALL

THE CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS. GRAMMARi.trBTS THE J-BAD. I'HRBE-POINT- WIN* OVKR RIFLES. A SURPRISE • BY NORTH 1 SHORE. I UNIVERSITY WELL BEATEN. ) AST Ml NTT K DEBACLE BY POXSONBV. I'hc rain which had threatened all day on Saturday held ofr until the fall of darkness, and the large crowd nf spectators who hud been attracted to Eden Park bv the expectation of good football consequently saw the panics played under dry conditions, which favoured spcctAcula'r play. While the tennis were too evenly matched to permit of continuous brilliancy in the two chief matches, play was continuously fast and open, and tiierc was plenty of incident and excitement. On Xo. 1 ground, where College Rifles and Grammar Old l!oys contested the issue; play was confined to the forwards a great deal more Hum is usual with these teams, but it was open forward ■play which swung from end to end at a great pace at times, and was intermingled with dribbling and passing work in which there was plenty of incident. Generally Grammar held the upper hand throughout, leading in the first spell by six' to nil, and lidding another converted try when the Ililles did eventually get a. try, which was converted. The score of lI—S just about represented the difference between the teams on the day's play. On No. 2 . ground the PonsonbyMariat Brothers game sec-sawed in a j most ■exciting fashion till Ponsonby got ft narrow lead of O—S, and seemed likely on tlie run of piny to hold it. In fact, for a. considerable trine it looked as if Ponsonby would add the points to make their win a decisive one, but in the last ten minutes they went completely to pieces, and -Marist Brothers piicu on 13 points in quick order, giving them the win by '21 to 1). These results leave Grammar with a clear lead of two points in the competition at the end of the round. North Shore, on their own ground, t-prang a surprise on University by defeating them by 19 points to 8,. a loss that puts' the pbpular students' team practically out of the running for the championship, except as a disturbing factor for the leading teams. Grafton 4>eat Eden by 37 points to 5. COLLEGE RIFLES V. GRAMMAR. The same jumped into high speed at once, and each side attacked In turn In open play during the first, five minute*. When thev settled Grammar won! to the attack. Ifwersen and C. Badcley 111 turn inukinpr openings, but holding 100 ling, 'i'lie whites kept Itlflts hard down on defence till s forward breakaway brought relief. Nippy play among the Grammar backs had the blue's again In their twenty-five, til! a breakaway by (irierson, Mclnncs, Kv.-rctt. nndSievwright set play at the other end. A counter assault by Bintott, ('leal, and Wll- , Hams returned the bull to the Rifles twenty-five, where exciting open play among the forwards ended in V. Badqlcy ,inst missing in a drop at goal, and Itifles .. forcing. I-'rom the drop-out a passing hont amoin! the white forwards wont to the line, and the Itifles' forwards liroke clear. Again the whites came back, ami Itifles forced when Williams kicked over the line. Grammar kept rapping for a score till Billing anil Kvcrctt broke through and cleared Just as the change ove'.' sounded. A forward and back passing bout started Itifles on the attack, hut they failed to sustain It, and though a chance came from a nice breakaway by Austin it was lost through fumbling. A kick by C. Hadeloy that screwed to the line hail Grammar again on the attack, but. l'illlng cleared to the side-line at the centre. . Blocking a return of a free kick deal sent the ball on to Taylor, who was brought down in the Itifles twenty-live. Here,, from a scrum, lfworsen cleverly feinted to tlie open and worked the blind side, sending on to C. Badcley to Williams, who punted over the line and recovered the ball to score a try that V. Badcley failed to improve. Grammar :i, College Itifles 0. A spell of centre play ended .in the Itifles dribbling to Grammar's twenty-five. Here a passing bout failed to get through, and after soriie scrumming on the line a pass brought relief to Grammar. Again College Rifles backs got into an attacking bout, but Grierson was caught in possession, anil a clearing kick by Ifwcrsen sent play to near half-way. Here Gillespie was slow to take a short kick, and his return was - taken off his foot by McC'iillough. who sent on to a comrade, and the ball travelled through several hands to Ifwersen, wlio scored a try. Again V. Badeley's kick failed. Grammar 0, College Itifles 0. The opening exchanges of the second spell were marked by improved open play by the Rifles pack, and a solid siege on the Grammar line was set up, to he relieved by defensive kicking. Grammar backs carried on to the attack; but. could not make a elean-ent advantage, and the blue forwards, aided with .1 mark by Grant, and another by Gillespie, sent them hack. Grammar opened np the play for it spell, and play became fast and exciting as Williams ano then V. Badcley. and MeCulloug'h shaped like scoring. Again from a passing boul Williams made a strong dash to near the line, but off-side play immediately after enabled the Rifles to save. Still keeping It open Grammar attacked again, and Ifwersen Just niisscd a'drop at goal. !h forward work Grammar .dribbled back to almost on the. line, but a breakaway by Barker cleared just as the bell went, for the last quarter. Excitement, came early when they resumed, for .r forward rush topped oft with handling work by the Rifles backs, saw Barker brought down at. the sideline near Grammar's line. From the throw-out Pilling secured, scored -and converted the try. Grammar o,'College Rifles Fast rallies at midfield ended In V. Badcley passing to Williams, who cross-kicked, and the hall was played on by Clcal. whri picked up anil passed to Bintott, who scored. Ifwcrsen goaled, and the score was Grammar'll. College Itifles 3. The blues now threw the ball ahonf. with more abandon, and in a spasm of passing and dribbling went to the line. A free to Gramntnr. and the kick failed to get touch. Barker's kick sow Jfwersen fumble, and his return was charged down, enabling Barker to follow up and score. Billing failed to convert. Grammar 11. College Rifles 8. I/ed by Brown and Mclnncs the Rifles went to the attack In it dashing rush, and the Grammar pack worked clear, pnly to be scnt'back by a long kick by Barker. The bines were pressing whin a cut-off dash by Ifwersen brought, relief. At this stage ifwcrsen- had to retire,' his place being taken by his brother. A dash by Williams was nullified by, off-side play, and the ball was nt the ce'utrc when the whistle sounded with the score: Grammar Old Boys'll, College Rifles 8, Mn Baull -was referee. GRAFTON V, EDEN. Grafton had a field day against, the greens, who took the field with only twelve players. Towards half-time more,.-clime, on, and. Nt one stage Eden liafl, sixteen men mi the field. As soon as Mils was discovered one retired. In a game ragged, but. fast and open, the blacks threw tlie ball In happy, reckless style, nearly all their points coining from rushes in which the cross-kick figured effectively.. Eden's tackling at the start was. very deadly, and It was some time ere Taylor registered first blood. 3-0. A couple of minutes later Nicholas got over after a glaring knock-on. o—o. In the second quarter Eden opened well, with' the: wind behind,' ,md_ Nalder did a solo sprint that , took him us far as Finalay, who gras3ed him in fine fine style. Eden pressed again, and Qasparieli saved well. Grafton then monopolised the tield, and forced the greens. From a scramble after some wild passing on the Hue Taylor touched down. St—o. He came awfiv again a minute later with a fine sprint, but the defence held. Cook, liowcrcr, set the backs going from a scrum, and Lynch dashed over. 12—0. Another passing rush saw the 6ame player score under tin.' posts, hut still the Graftou kickers failed. .From then till half-time Eden rallied. They''missed'at-goal, aad shortly after- - wtrds Sotcci the blacks,,., ■

The opening of the second half gave the | greens their one used chance, Stewart dash- j over and converting his score. !•» —5. Immediately after M. f/amb retaliated by | scoring in an easy position, but this try and .mother awarded to Prentice for obstruction under the posts also went unconverted. 21-5. -M. Lamb registered the first score to be con vert 0(1, Moore ' adding the major points. 26-rS. In the final quarter, despite the wind against them, Grafton continued to score. (tAsqntrich got over, and Increased the total by converting. Lynch and Taylor both added tries, unconverted, and the game finished with the total 37 Jo r,. Mr. Millar was referee. PONSONBY V. MAKIST 0.8, Ponsonbv scored in the first few minutes of play in' their match with Marlst. "While both teams were dwelling about the Hideline Wade speculated, and. following up quickly, scored before the opposition realised what had happened. Marlst shortly opener! their account too; they bad been showing the better team work, and tne bail coming out to the backs Malloy shortpunted anil Thomas followed through and scored a try which Peters converted. IMs two-point lead was only temporary, ior Gregory took a relieving kick by Thomas in front of the goal and scored another try which was not converted. A good mark by McManus stemmed a .Marist rush, but they were soon back again. Anderson being conspicuous in the van. I'on son by got relief in their twenty-five by an infringement, and their forwards worked back to half-way, where Hnrlly pulled them up. O'Connor, at full-back, mtskicked across the goal, however, and Earlly taking (hp hull offside Ponsonbv gut a free, which Gregorv just failed In turn in account. Neither team hail settled down when the second quarter was commenced. Brady at wing three-quarter was a weak link in the Tykes' hack machinery. and lost several opportunities. McCoy, l'onsonby's full, was kept fiusv with lons kick#, hut put plenty ot power behind well-placed defensive boosts. The two Cascys anil Peters headed the Tyke pack in an offensive In the livorit.v-tive corner, and the last-named got across from the line out. His kick failed. Marist S. Pousotiby ti. Ponsoiihy had a nice concerted limit anions the hacks, which sawWade. on the wins, stopped in the corner. When they opened out to the opposing side Thomas intercepted and kicked downtield, McCoy savins. The venue was changed immediately, for Thomas (Ponsonby) cut off a pass from Karlly and made a dash, transferrins to Shirley. The latter's transfer went adrift, but the movement was sustained and the hail was passed across the tieiil anions the bucks, Wade getting It war the line, and this time sot across. The kick failed. Ponsontiy 0. Marlst .V A splendid run by Thomas put some life Into the same on resuming, and took Ponsonbv into the twenty-live corner. Had he sonc' Oil Ills own he would probably liave sot across; as it was lie was unsupported and Malloy saved, lu close play the Tykefi worked buck again. Ponsontiy forwards were ioatlns, and failure tu follow up with the wind behind high kicks made the Marlst backs' defence easy. The- two blues cntitlimeil to press their advantage, until PonKonhy backs came away with a run. a try being negatived by a knock on. McWilllams took the ball from the ensuing scrum, and Ponsonbv were about over. Play veered across to the other side, where Maris! marked and got relief. Until halfway through the last Quarter Ponsonbv maintained their advantage, but at last the solid battling ot the Marist pack proved too much for the defence, and they put on no less than thirteen points. The lirst try was gained by Thomas, who carried three or four defenders across with him. Peters goaled. Hnrlly and Scott also sot tries, and put the Issue beyond doubt. The first was converted by Brady, aud the final score was 2] to !' in Marists - favour. WORTH SHORE V. UNIVERSITY. 'Vartii.v kicked off with the wind iu their favour. Shore strongly attacked from the onset, and In a very few minutes Arklegot across, whose try was converted by Heed. Ark!<! again crossed in an excellent position a few minutes later, passing through the 'Varsity defence with apparent l taso, but this try was noL converted. Shore S, 'Varsity nil. From a kick well down the Held- front' Mawson. Kcegari got. the ball, and slipped across the Shore line, registering 'Varsity's' first' score., but .the attempt at goal-failed. Shore 'Varsity; !}... [Tlie first quarter ended with Shore ■ strongly attacking. Resuming,- Shore again attacked with the increased-advantage of a strong wind directly behind them. Uninteresting play followed for some time, until Fairgray was held up on the line. A smart passing rush by the 'Varsity forwards was also frustrated. Shore's lead was increased by a further try , obtained by Speed, but Stlehbury failed with the kick. Shore 11, 'Varsity A few minutes' later lirlnsdcn initiated a brilliant passing bout, that enabled Wiseman to score. Hopkins succeeded.with the kick, making 'Varsity's total 8, against their opponents' 11. Tho spell ended with a series or rushes by the 'Varsity forwards against the Shore defences. The second half opened in cold, drizzling rain, which made conditions most, uncomfortable and had the effect of thinning the line of spectators. 'Varsity for a timo strenuously pressed the Shore backs, until Carriith relieved adiHien It situation. Oil another occasion Manson came lo the rescue. Park'made a brilliant dash for tho Shore line. Jiiid almost got it. his effort, being frustrated within-inches of his objective.' \n attempt, by Hopkins' from a penalty did not succeed. The game entered into Its last quarter.'wilh 'Varsity's turn to battle against the wind. As was only lo be expected Shore, led by Gold: ■water, opened with a warm attack, and for a time it appeared /lis If their attacks would only meet with the same success as the opposing team had in a similar situation. until Carruth made a spirited dash for the line, and obtained a further try, which was converted by need, making Shore's total Hi' to 'Varsity's 8. Shore continued to press with slices*. forcing their opponents well down, and finally into their own twenty-five, where they stood at bay for some time until Park relieved. The game was uow in its final stages, and it was <|ulle impossible for 'Varsity to reduce the lend- of a Shore pack. . During the ■course of. a Shore rush Park funiblgd.. and before he could recover, the watchful Paltry was down on the line with the ball. Iteed failed to convert. Shore 19, 'Varsity 8. A' momeiit or so later the Shore pack again hotly attacked, but Park on this occasion was ready, and no score resulted. The whistle sounded-with Shoro still pressing on. the,' Varsity line. Mr. George Gregg was In charge of the gainn. Tlie.'match throughout was bright, snappy, and full of interest from start, to finish. The' win for Shore, particularly by such a. In re margin, came as a considerable surprise even to their own most sanguine supporters. SECOND GRADE. Ponsonby heat Elierslle. 0. Training' College 2?,. heat Suburbs S. Mt. Albert <>. beat.
