! m CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS. . UNIVERSITY A BEATS ST. LUKE'S t . MOUNT EDEN'S DOUBLE-FIGURE WIN. The fifth round of the Auckland Hockey Association's championshif matches was decided on Saturday under splendid weather conditions. Tin grounds were in good order, and fast games resulted. Chief interest was cen tred in the meeting of University A and St. Luke's, a win by the odd goal in live being gained by the students. Areta, playing two men short, were beaten by Somerville by 5 to nil. University 13 suffered another defeat, going under to Mount Eden by the big score of 10 goals to nil. UNIVERSITY A V. ST-LUKE'S. W. R. Garrard (St. Luke's) and Grice bullied off. and the ball went to the reds' twenty-five, where a "good hit by McLeod was well countered by Burton bitting into the circle. The next few moments saw tw< 'bullies at the St. Luke's twenty-five. Steel eventually cleared with a lofty hit, and ■Garrard, beating S'loman and Hume, dispatched the ball to Potter and Hookbain. A fast centre by the latter crossed the goal j mouth, and was stopped by F. Williams, who I returned. Slouian cleared, aud the students' | forwards carried play into the reds' circle. Steele replied, and the St. Luke's van fought desperately on the edge of the University danger zone. A big hit by one of the reds' hacks was dealt with sufficient success, and after the Williams brothers tried to rob the other for the ball it came back fast to .F. Williams, who rocked in a hot shot, which cannoned off the goalie into the net !after 33 minutes' play. St. Luke's 1, University 0. The score roused the students, and they made a hot attack on the St. Luke's goal. A fast shot by Grlce hit the post, and Garrard shot hard, but without the necessary direction from the rebound. A Tew minutes later the students were again goal-hunting, but Menzies ran into the bunch and kicked clear. Five minutes before half-time St. Luke's suffered a couple of corners. Tlarman attempted to shoot on both occasions without success, and for the remainder of the spell the reds were mostly on the defensive, but managed to keep their goal intact. . The game was stubbornly contested by both teams when the second spelt was ' entered upon, but l'niversity by a sustained and well combined attack won through their opponents' defence and Grice goaled. St. Luke's were again hard set in defence from the bully, but a fortunate stroke by the goalie put his side on the attack, and fit. Luke's second goal was scored after a brief struggle in the University circle. The students were, however, in a determined vein, and almost from the bully they swept throuch the St. Luke's defences, anil a minute or two later Grice netted the ball from a corner. The St. Luke's combination appeared to -weaken uuder the persistent assaults of the students, and although several attacks were repulsed the defensive work showed ragged In patrhes. while hard slogging ruined more than one scoring chance. Obstruction by Steele in his own circle gave the students the advantage of a penalty bully, and the result was another goal by Grice. The reverse stiffened up St. Luke's, and In the later stages of the game they kept University pretty active ln repelling boarders. The i defence proved sound, however, and no further score was counted against either side, the game ending: L'niversity A 3. St. Luke's 2. •Mr. It. C. Avery was referee. MOUNT EDEN V. TJNIVERSITY B. University B was first away, a sharp passing run takinc play to Mt. Eden's twentyfive, where Wheeler stopped progress. A smart run up the left of the field by Thompson put University on the defensive, a twenty-five bully resulting. Mt. Eden kept up the pressure, and Roach kicked clear. The browns again attacked sharply, and A. ! Alexander found the net. Mt. Eden 1, University 0. Mt. Eden forwards broke 'away. and with sharp passing gained the 'blues' circle, when a chance came to Thompson, who netted. Mt. Eoen 2. t'niversity P. O. A fine run initiated by A. Alexander saw the ball travel rapidly through the Mt. Eden vanguard. The ball flew past the net. D. Alexander returned a =ood centre, and araln Thompson shot and netted. Mt. Eden 3 l'niversity TJ 0. A few moments later Mt. Eden gained a corner hit. Watson knocked ! on, and a free hit went to the blues. The ball was intercepted, and A. Alexander, racing through, aaain netted. Mt. Eden 4, University B 0. Burton next raced up the rlzht of the Hue and centred. A couple of forwards attempted to shoot. The ball went on to Thompson, who again shot, and netted. IMt. Eden 5. Eden 7, University B 0. t'niversity somewhat revived after this sudden dose, took a turn in the attack, and for a time enjoyed a visit t« Mt. Eden's circle. They were soon sent iiack to their own territory, and atrain Indulged in defensive tactics. A. Alexander at last netted. Mt. Fden S. University B Ol A. Alexander added the next goal, time being called with Mt. Eden winners by 10 goals to 0. Mr. Skinner was referee. SOMERVILLE V. ARETA. Areta were handicapped by the absence of two of their forwards, and the game began with a Somerville attack in which Simpson and Hailwood figured prominently. Areta were forced to concede a corner, i.vt a good drive by Dryland afforded temporary relief. IL England followed up the advantage, but Nicholson failed to give support and a rapid forward movement ended in Hailwood goaling. Somerville essayed several attacks, which were intercepted by the Areta backs, and just before the whistle IL Watts succeeded in rea.hlng the circle, where a straggle ensued, an-1 C. Watts goaled. Resuming after the interval. Areta made a strong effort to score, but Cooper saved. Balldon beat H, Watts on Hie wing, but George returned, and Yfatts Brothers, getting command, carried to rhe "!«'le. where C. Watts goaled again. Somerville 3, Areta 0.. H. Watts centred well to his "brother fiive, who lifted an easy „n .■ right into the net. Somerviile 4. Areta O. Somerville continued to take the initiative but play was stopppd temporarily owing to an Injury to an Areta hack. After some .hard driving dive Watts vetted again, Areta now being almost wholly n;i tl".e defensive, but the attacks were 'hi.'fly of an individual nature, and therefore more easily repulsed.
