CITY'S SOUTHERN OUTLET.
MANUKAU ROAD WIDENING. , ] WORK TO START WITHOUT DELAY. The Mayor, Mr. J. H. Gunson, in discussing the widening of the Manukau Road at Newmarket this morning, said that the City Council greatly desired to proceed with this business at once. Arrangements have been completed with the Dilwortb trustees," he added, "and the road will be widened on that section immediately, as a settlement lias been effected with all the lessees concerned. In reply to the telegrams sent to the Minister of Railways last week the following wire was received by mc this morning:—"Replying \,o your telegram of the 14th concerning the street widening at Manukau Rosd, instructions are going forward to district engineer, Auckland, to confer with you reiardivg the details of the new alignment and necessary alterations, after which you will be in a position to proceed with preparatory work.--D. H. Guthrie." >
"This." said the Mayor. "will enabh? the railway l.md at Newmarket and Epsom to be rendered availrble at once. The street widening work Mill be put in hand without delay. ThU represents a strip of land 14ft in width from Rcmuc-a Road to the Junction Hotel, and will ureatly improve this important thorou"bfare. The concreting of this road will be completed jointly by the City Cofincil and the Newmarket Borough Council, under arransements nlreadv completed, without any de'ay, other than rs nees- nsary by the removal of the tramlines and the setting back of the street to the new alignment."
