The brigade by splendid work prevented the fire spreading to the other parts, but it was some time before the flames were finally overcome, as they had had a good start by the time the brigade was summoned to the scene of the outbreak.

The basement of the building wag sub-leased to Norden and Co., wha entered into occupation about a week ago, and the produce stored there consisted of a large stock of butter, bacon, cheese, eggs, etc. Most of the firm. stock, fortunately, was in cold storage chambers in another part of the city. The stock and plant in tne building were insured for about £3000 in the United Insurance Co.

General merchandise formed the stock of H. O. Wiles, Ltd. As it was stored on the second and third floors, it wag not damaged to any great extent, except by smoke and water. The building was insured for £5000 in tlie United Co., and the stock was insured for £3360 in the same office.
