CITY OOtWCIL VOTES £100. Dr. T. W. Leys and Mr. h. A. Manricr waited on the City Council last nigh!. Ms a deputation on behalf of the Workers' lidiu-ation Association, to make out a ca?e fur assistance by means of a grant. Dr. 1.--ys pointed out that the W.K.A. had for its object the bringing of higher education to the industrial section of tiie community through the means of tutorial classes, and »a» engaged in a. work of great value and importance t" the community. He explained in what manner the assistance of the University stall' was enlisted in the ir.liter of lectures, and emphasised the fact that while the expenses in Auckland were about £ 1000 a year, the Government grant \\us only £500. and the association had to depend tin other sources for revenue. He appealed to the council, as the large.-t employers of labour in the city, and suggested that a vote of £200 would noi be unreasonable.
Mr. Mander pointed out that the class (attendances liad increased this year from 60 to MOO student*, and that financial aid was needed. After the deputation had retired, the Mayor moved that thr council make the W.ti.A. a vote of r ICO. This was supported by Mr. Holdswurth, while Messrs. Savage and Bloodworth urged that a larger sum was jiistilied. • A liberal vote was urged al.-o by Mr. Crookes. Eventually hi-; Worship agreed to make the motion that the' council vote £ 100 per annum, and an extra £.">0 this year, in view of the fact that that r-um had been voted two years ago anil had not been received by the association. This motion was unanimously carried.
