The cheese trade is at present in a strange condition. For some weeks the markpt has hcen falling for no apparent reason. Distributors have bought little, and Importers bnve done little to press them to buy. But a change is Imminent. It is oipected that the imports this month w i!l amount to 9,.j00 tons, of which one-half has already been landed. As. moreover, It is expected that the Import in April will only amount to something under 4.000 tons, there Is likely to lie a shortage, In view of the fort that the average monthly Imports has fnr a number of years been 11.000 tons. This peculiar position In the trade Is atttlbuted here to a temporary deficiency of shipping from New Zealand, and if this is the case there will be a surplus later when the Dominion stocks are forward. For tbe moment the shortage Is expected to extend over some months.
