SHELTER FOR THE NEEDY.
On account of the exceptional call this year on the Salvation Arany organisations by poor and needy persons, who have been obliged to appeal for the assistance of temporary lodgings to help them over a pinch, the accommodation at the Army's various institutions has been overtaxed, aJid temporary arrangements to meet the position are being made 'by the erection of marquee accommodation on a vacant section next the workmen's home in Lome Street. Permission for this was given by the City Council last night, when the Mayor stated that after having been satisfied that the need was extraordinary and urgent, he had authorised the use of part of the balance of the old epidemic relief fund for the purpose. Mr. Bloodworth remarked tnat he thought a site further removed from the heart of the town would he more desirable, while Mr. iE. Davis yras of opinion that it was rather a reproach to the city that there wa« not some 'building available for the ;purpose, but the Mayor assured them that the whole position had been fully considered, and proper safeguards would 'be made against any undesirable effects arising from tne use of this site.
