LIONS AT THE ZOO.
SENT FOB EXERCISE. A FINE OF £19 10/. At the Onehunga Police Court X\ morning, before Mr. AY. R. McKean, 5.5, John James Boyd was charged with ket ing lions in the borough, contrary to % borough by-laws. Mr. H. A. Yocknt, town clerk, deposed that on May 8 1% defendant applied to the Borough Con. cil for permission to put his lions iifc large cases at the Zoo for exercise, i the inspector of nuisances had ordei( j him to remove them from the smalt j travelling cases. The application tt\ refused, but notwithstanding this t( lions were put into the Zoo on May I and kept there until May 22. Edward K. Boyd, son of the defendaisaid they were compelled to take t\ lions out of their two cages, whit, measured 14ft by Oft, and they had 11 other place to put them in but the larj | cases at the Zoo. Efforts had been nia( to sell the animals, and if they were n( soon disposed of they would be destroyet Mr. McKean said an offence had be« committed. Defendant was liable to \ fined £5 for each day that the lions wci kept in the Zoo. It was not a case fc a nominal penalty, seeing that this wa the defendant's third offence. The defei dant would be fined 30/ per day fa thirteen days, making a total of fl9 10/ with costs £2 11/.
