CUTTING EXPENDITURE.
WELLINGTON DEBIT BALANCE. A DRASTTC REMEDY. (By Telegraph—Press Asoclation.) * WELLINGTON, this day. The Wellington City Council, which was faced with raising rates or cutting expenditure down by £58,000, has decided on the latter course. "The financial statement of the Wellington City Council for the year ended March 31, showed a debit balance of over £42.000," save the "Dominion." "The probable cut in the estimates, it is believed, is to be arrived at by making h curtailment in the Reserves Account. With regard to rates. £285,266, this includes arrears £8000, current £277,000, and additional 10 per cent, £330, in round figures. Publicans' licenses amounted to £1018. Waterworks expenditure includes £33,182 for working expenses, an 9 £22,207 for interest. The estimates have to be cut down by about £58,000 in order to make the revenue balance with the expenditure."
