i OPENED AT PARNELI* "< PROBLEMS OF THE CHURCH. > The twenty-second General Synod of the Church of England in New Zealand, ' the most important council assemibly of 1 this church in the Dominion, was opened 1 at St. Mary's Hall, Parnell, this after- 1 I noon, the acting Prdniate, Right Rev- < lerend Bishop Julius, of Christchurch, ! I presiding. It is expected that the see- < Ision will extend over ten days, and the * views of the highest dignitaries will be * heard on the various problems that, are ' facing the Church locally and nationally. 1 | Holy Communion was celebrated in St. ' ■Mary's Cathedral this morning, and ' Synod was opened at 3 p,m, with the * calling of the roll and the usual official 1 j preliminaries which occupied consider- ' ably over an hour. ' The most notaible feature o-f the after- ' noon session will be the opening address < of the acting Primate, in which Biehop ' Julius will traverse the outstanding ' problems facing the Church at the present day, and ie expected to give a lead 1 in the breadth of his views, tempered ' with his intimate knowledge of the prac- J tical difficulties confronting his confreres ] in making the local adjustments neces- ! jsary to the ultimate attainment of ' ideals. After reference to Bishop Nev- ' .ille, Archdeacon Harper and other de- | ! ceased members of the Synod, the bishop 'will speak of the resolutions of the Lam- ' 'beth Conference as affecting the provinces of New Zealand, and of re-union ' in particular. He will deal with the . position of women in the councih of ■ the Church, and with the missions to the heathen and the proposed Board of Missions, and will also have something to say upon the vexed question of the Bible in schools. After the primate's address the Synod will adjourn till tomorrow morning.
