INTER-STATE TENNIS.

: N.Z. LADIES' TEAM. I t BEATEN BY VICTORIANS. ' SYDNEY, April t>6. ■■ The inter-State tennis tournament was continued to-day in bright weather. j but the ground was heavy and sodden, as a result of the forenoon's rain. The i New Zealandevs lost all their matches asrainst Victoria, which waa represented by the cleverest combination yet dispalched from the South. The New Zea- , landers' play was a great improvement on their previous showing, but they were unlucky in being confronted by such a formidable team. In the singles, Misß Boyd beat Miss Curtis (New Zealand), 6—4, 7—5. This was the match of the afternoon, and provided a capital exhibition of tennis, but the sodden ground took the sting , out of the New Zcalander'R drives. Miss Curtis led two love in each set. Hiss Randell beat Hiss Wellwood (New Zealand). 4—6, tf—4, 11—!). This was a, stirring contest, in which Miss Wellwood was somewhat handicapped by the heavy going. Miss Mountain beat Miss Payton (New Zealand), G—2, 3—6, 6—l. The New Zealand player was unable to get going in the third game. Mrs. Lester beat Miss Macfarlane, 6—3, C—3. The latter executed fine shots and effective back- [ hand strokes, but was pitted against a superior player. Tn the doubles, Misses Mountain and Randell beat Misses Payton and Wellwood, C—o, 3—3. The winners proved to be n. much better combination than the New Zealanders. Miss Boyd and Mrs. leister beat Misbor Curtis and Macfnrlane. 7—5, 7—5. The game was finished in the dark. The Victorian couple were too strong for their opponents, who, however, disputed every inch of the way. The latter, at one stage of , the second game, looked like reversing , the tables, but their spurt was not , maintained. On to-days play New Zealand"would have beaten New South Wales. The [ tournament will be continued on Thursday, when New Zealand again plays \ Victoria.—(A. and N.Z. Cable.)
