THE TYPHOID EPIDEMIC.

; (To the Editor.) Sir, —With reference to the typhoid outbreak at lit. Albert, it is interesting to read -Jr. Hughes' advice on how to ininimisf'the risk of 'infection by boiling all -rat-: and milk. But is he aware that the danger of contagion lies in the back yards of nearly every home in dirty Alt. Albert, for the simple reason that people are allowed to bury their nightsoil (to save 6d per week), irrespective of the si_e of their allotment, and compelled to bury the house refuse because this one-eyed borough council will not put on a dust cart? Mt. Albert had a clean up week? {and it was satisfactory from fhe (Council's point of view). But if they kept at it for twelve months lit. Albert would not be clean. It is about time this council woke up and compelled people to patronise the night service.—l am, etc.. RESIDENT.

(To the Editor.) • Sir.—The typhoid epidemic in Mt, Albert may or may not be caused hy the water supply. If the authorities are honest in their efforts to take every precaution against the spread of disease, why do they permit the use of the nightsoil dump, which is within a few yards of a closely populated area? The antiquated carts in use are a menace and source of annoyance to all residents in the locality. Surely no argument can be adduced to prove that this practise is a sanitaTy one. It should positively not be permitted in the metropolitan area. Irrespective of contracts or agreements, the public health should be studied first. Now is the time for the health authorities to show that they mean business. —T am, etc.. RESIDENT.

<To the .Editor.)
