RANGIRIRI HILLS ROAD.
SELECTION OF NEW ROUTE. DEVIATION WORK IN HAND.
In connection with the many difficulties concerning the Rangiriri Hills road the preliminary steps towards a road deviation scheme have been taken by the Government. Officials from the Public Works Department, Wellington, recently inspected the proposed new route for the purposes of deviation, while the remaindifficulties are expected to be settled within the next few days. On Thursday last agreements were signed with settlers concerned, to allow -of the work being commenced. Surveyors of the Public Works Department are now engaged in putting in working pegs. Already large quantities of cement and
timber arc on the ground, and it is ex- j pected that the initial operations will be commenced at the Meremere flaxmills! as soon as the worfcin s plans can bej completed, probably in four or five weeks' i time. The route of the new deviation is from' the foot of the Rangiriri Hills, and from there to the properties of Messrs Schick and Zimmerman ah>_- a level grade, for a distance of 2J miles.
