FIJI INDUSTRY.

NEW ENDEAVOUR. PINEAPPLES AND BAXAXAS. (From Our Own Correspondent.) SUVA. April 9. While sugar and copra »re so seriously suffering from world depression, attention is being directed to other means of production. The trial shipment of bananas, while it took no less than 30 days to reach Vancouver, did not open well, because shippers insisted upon packing the bananas in <»ses loose, instead of Rending them in whole bunches as desired by the Canadian merchants. However, it is confidently believed that Colonel Dyer, who is now in Canada, will complete satisfactory arrangements for regular monthly shipments in adequate cool apace. A week or two ago a trial shipment of 700 cases of mandarins and oranges were sent to Auckland, and sold from 21/ to 25/ a case. Thi> fruit was kept in a fly-prool chamber here by Government inspectors for 'five days prior to shipment, and landed in first-rate, clean condition. Fiji grows beautiful pineapples, and at present we have two parties, one from Honolulu.' who are pineapple growing and canning experts, and one from Vancouver, who hare full experience, and who bring a small plant to can —no matter what. Thejr arc ready to can meat, chicken, fish, fruit, or vegetables. As there is ample eeope for all those branches here, it wo-uld appear as if Fiji was going to get busy.
