AUCKLAND CHESS CLUB.

AXKUAL MKETING. The thirty-eighth annual meeting of the Auckland Chess Club was held In tbe Club Room. H.M. Arcade Buildings, last Monday night, Mr. A. Wright, sen., vice-president and acting-president, presiding over a large and representative attendance of members. In moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet, tbc chairman made feeling reference to the loss sustained by the club through the death of the president. Mr. F. Harvey. The club had also lost the active Freeman, through ill-health. Mr. 'Free-1 man's services to the club over many years were recognised by his being unanimouslyelected a life member. The prizes won in tournaments during the year were donated during the evening, tn? winners in the various grades being:— Championship, Sir. T. Coulthard: intermediate. Mr. 3. V. Senior: junior. Mr. H. Lees: open handicap. Mr. C. Stewart. The special prize donated by Mr. 3. C. Grierson for best performance in telegraphic matches was won by Mr. M. Arapoff. The election of officers for the coming year resulted ac follows:—Patron, Mr. R. 11. Abbott (re-elected); president, Mr. A. Wright: vice-presidents. Messrs. P. N. 'Stewart and H. H. Smith: hon. secretary. Mr. C. Stewart: hon. treasurer. Mr. P. X. j Stewart: director of play. Mr. D. J. Jones: hon. auditor. Mr. A. E." Layland; commltj.tee. Messrs. Barker." Snllivan. Andreae. and ; Fotherlngham. with the various officers ex officio. It was decided to open Hie season on Thursday. April 20. at the Clubroom. 42. H.M. Arcade, by holding a "lljrhtning tournament. -- open to all chess players, •whether members of the club or not.
