The different point of" view! Mr. Harry Parkin, of Messrs. Parkin Bros., told "the Builders and Contractors' Association at a mcoting in Wellington tha.t when he arrived in Xcw Zealand eighteen years ajro 'he joined up with the Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and Joiners and was one of the managers ot jthe Brooklyn branch. The society apJproached the builders for an increase in ithe wages of carpenters, and he was one lof the delegates. The delegates received a poor hearing, and he went a.way with a very bad impression of {the builders and contractor? of Wollinston. One amiable old gentleman laid down the law in unmistakable terms. ''You carpenters don't work now as we did," ho said. "When T was startins out T worked from daylight to dark." That was all right so far as it went. "Shortly afterwards," «aid Mr. Parkin, "my brother and I started business on our own account, and our first contract was for a small Catholic Church at Crawford Road, Kilbirnie. Just after we had taken the contract the builders and contractors complained to the amalgamated society that its officers were entering into competition witfh them and-obtaining contracts by unfair means.
