WEST END CLUB. MRS. JOHN CLARK SHIELD. Eight crews competed for the annual set of trial fours for the Mrs. John Clark Shield under the auspices of the. West End Club on Saturday .afternoon:— In the first heat crews stroked by N'ewdick, Edgar, and Bigelow faced the starter. From the word go the crews jumped away smartly, and, setting a warm pace, raced on even terms for half-way. Each crew took a turn forging ahead, until, when Hearing the finishing line, Newdlck forged ahead and got tbe judge's verdict by a foot. The second heat.saw tbe crews of Bright. Wheeler, aud Norden go out to test their powers. A clinking race, from the start resulted in Bright crossing the line with a few Inches to spare. The crews of Skinner and Edgar contested the' third beat. Off the wharf Skinner challenge*], and a strenuous finish ensued, ln which Skinner forged ahead in tbe last few strokes, and won by a foot. The crews lv the final were stroked by Skinner. Newdlck, and Bright. The starter got tbe crews awaf splendidly, and for about a quarter of the distance the crews raced prac tlcally level. Then Newdlck went Into the lead- Skinner and Bright both spurted, and closed on the leader. Approaching the wharf the crews were almost level. At this stage one of Skinner's stretchers broke. TbL« left the Issue between Newdlck and Bright. A great finish ensued, In which Newdlck gained the honours by a few inches. The winning crew was: Newdlck (4), Hunter (3 ).G. Couway (2). Hewson (1), F. Coilway cox. On Saturday, 22nd, the West End Rowing Club will row a set of trial fours for trophies presented by Mr. F. J. Cooper. The club anticipate racing two sets of stump outrigger trials, on arrival of the two new boats from Wellington at an earlydate. With the object of continuing the interest of friends in the club's welfare, the committee has decided to hold a series of smial evenings throughout the winter months. The first will take tjie form of a euchre and dance on Thursday, 20th. ROTORUA REGATTA. The following crews have been selected to represent the Waltematn Club at the forthcoming regatta at Rotorua: — Heavy Maidens. —W. Lindsay, J. Johnson. Mackav, L. Patteson. Light Maidens.—J..
