CHARGED WITH THEFT.
FURTHER CASES PENDING. YOUXG-MAX REMANDED. l)urin{* the past few weeks a number pf complaints have been received by the police from business people who have 'been the victims of fraud in one form or another. These have been investigated fey the Detective Department, and it is likely that several of these dishonest transactions will be charged against Francis Joeelyn Johnstone (Mr. Dickson), who has been arrested by Detec-tive-Sergeant Lssell, of the Newton Police Station, and was remanded to-day till April in by Mr. J. W. Poynton, S.-M., on I he count that he sto!<> four gold ring-?, valued -at £100, from Mrs. Ashman, a lady with whom he was staying at Birkenhcad. Bail was allowed in this case for £500, accused being given his liberty en condition that he reported himself daily to the police. Other charges are to be preferred against the young man, who is believed to know something of several transactions in which business people supplied goods or cash, only to find themselves the victims of false representations. A ca'binetmakoi complained that on January 17 last he supplied a man with furniture valued nt £2.1 10/, and another affair was reported from 'Whangarei, where an imposter who borro.ved, for the occasion, the name of R. J. Morris, storekeeper, ordered from a traveller, and was supplied by a local firm, with toilet poods worth£62 16/5. Some months ago another local lirni could not trace a man who owed them £160 for drapery delivered, and only recently another complaint was laid that a man had paid another £55 before lie discovered that the other's protestations had been untrue. Tt is understood that these one-sided transactions are amongst the different things that Johnstone will be asked to explain when he appears on Mondayweek.
