SWIMMING.

AnCK-AWD HARBOUR H.ACX. XEXT SATURDAY'S ATTRACTION. On next Saturday the Ponsonby Swimming Club will conduct their postponed harbour race carnival at Hnelly Beach baths. The harbour event, which is j the biggest handicap swimming event, , last year 'brought forth 3S entries, of whom ,"lo' started and 3.j finished. ; This was a record for the event, i TlUs year eighty-five entries have > been received, which is more than ; douide last year. Handicappers llortou and Crawford have well concealed the i winner, and opinion in the swimming world is divided a* to who may win. ] Rough water will probably interfere t with the chances of 'back-markers, wish the exception of Enwright and Murrell. ' The first-named is now reaping the : benefit of systematic training, and is ■ dangerous over any distance. Murrell has the advantage of being associated with surf work at Lyall Bay for many years, and if in form weather conditions will not affect him. 7 Of the ladies, Miss Waldron, it anywhere near her old form, must certainly • have a good chance, and the winning of 1 this event will _c very popular with the ! 1 public. On the sixth and seventh minute ; mark there are a large number of un- ; known swimmers who may possibly produce a winner. Cioodchap has improved t considerably this season, and also has been training consistently, and appears to have a good chance. There are quite a number of intermediate and junior lads, of whom FarnaTl, who is recog- , nised as a stayer, may proba_ly be close 1 up at the finish. J Besides the Wg event there is a very 1 interesting supporting programme with 1 record entries. The postponement of J this carnival was a keen disappointment to the promoters, who were confident, f if a fine day, the carnival would have J been a record gate. The interest, however, 13 still keeping up and except thai there are a number of other attractions, the Shelly Beach 'baths should 'be fillpd to their capacity. The club hopes to raise from this gala the sum of at least j £50, which will go a long way towards paying the expenses for their school instruction classes next year. c 1 MOUNT KDEX CLCB. '1 . t The Mount Eden Swimming Club will hold ■ the third carnival of the season at the Mount * Eden Baths to-nisht. when a very attractive programme will be derided.
