ECLIPSE OF THE SUN.

ARRANGEMENTS FOR *•! OBSERVATION. f'

The eclipse of the sun, which is to take place on September 21, was referred to the other day by Mr. J, T. Ward. Oovernniewt astronomer at Wanganui, who stated that he had had a letter from Dr. Campbell, of Lick Observatory, stating that a party of nine were coming out to make observations. Mr. Ward is endeavouring to persuade them, to come to Auckland, and after visiting Rotorua, to go by the river to Wanganui. He added that it was probable that a New Zealand astronomical party would proceed to Wallal (West Australia). although pereonally he did not expeci l>e able to make the trip, as the expense will be considerable. In astronomical circles the bait eiK'cess of the expedition is hoped for. the great essential in this connection being a clear 6ky at the time of the observation. ]n this connection Mr. Ward recalled the oclipge of the sun in ISBS. when he was fortunate enough to have every success with his observations at Castlepoint. The Government astronomer of that period chose the '.Cinity of MaEtcrton, and had ttie u.it fortune of clouds preventing any observations being taken.
