A SUGGESTION.
{To the Editor.) -Sir.—Once upon a time we were told i almost daily that this country was "gal- ■ loping to a deficit." It was a true bill. ! The deficit was there all right, but it ' was a small thing compared to tihe > mountain of indebtedness tiiat now con- • fronts v?. We heard also, in days gone r - by, about a politician who was described > as ' ; a wizard of finance." I forget to - whom the words were applied. But it » wasn't Mr. "Slasscy. That gentleman, by the way, in his frenzied quest for revenue, is Weeding the country white, ami how much longer Sew Zealand can continue to stagger under the load of taxation he has heaped upon its reluctant back remains to be seen. The war . is largely responsible of course. But Mr. Massey is partly "responsible, and the : country is reaping now the harvest of ■ extravagance and recklessness sown by • him years ago. The question is, What , is to be done? Well there is one thing ; that might help. In his annual address • to the members of Auckland Stock Exchange the chairman expressed tho ' opinion that the Coromandsl goldfield • should 'be re-exploited, and said (in • effect) that there was probably more -, gold still awaiting discovery at Corol mandel than haa yet come to light. t Quite likely that is true. In any case . would it not pay the Government to . offer a reward for the discovery of a - payable goldfield at Coromandel or any- ( where else in New Zealand? The offer of a reward of, say. £5000 might result in • the finding of a field that would be the . salvation of the Dominion at a time ; when the outlook is full of menace. —I 1 am, etc., CITIZEN.
