STREET ratPROVXMEKTS. TO BE IMMEDIATELY RESTARTED; EARLY WORK ON TRAM EXTENSION. PROGRAMME FIXED BY WORKS COMMITTEE. A meeting of the City Council \Vorfc3 Committee was held yesterday afternoon, when all the matter? which the Council left to the committee with power to act were dealt with. These, were to do with the prosecution of works following upon the recent issue of the £400,000 loan for street improvement work, tramway esten. sion, and. other matters, and the committee passed a resolution at the meeting laying out the programme of work authorised by the Council for the coming year. Prior to the committee meeting the Mayor (Mr. J. H. Gunson) and the chairman of the Works Committee (Mr. ■G. Baildon) paid a full visit of inspection to the various spots at which it is proposed to renew activities, and the recommendations made to the committee in the afternoon and adopted by it after close consideration represent the complete programme of the works to be put in 'hand immediately after the New Year. The following is the text of the resolution passed by the committee: — "(a) The Council having raised its street empowering loan, it is resolved that the Grey Lynn streets improvement works be restarted at once, the first-work to be Beaeonsfield Street. That the newly-coated surface of Williamson Avenue be tarred and sanded at once. That Great North Road be concreted to ■ 4:he school, provided, the available sum is not exceeded. "(b) That work be restarted at once in the concrete paving of Remuera Road, and that the concrete paving of both South Road and Munuk.iu Road bo authorised to be put in hand as soon as practicable, either concurrently with or immediately following Remuera Road. "■" (c) That all steps be taken at once to obtain the necessary Order-in-Couneil for the tramway extension on Great South Road, and that this tramway- extension work be carried on concurrently with the road paving work from the Junction to the Harp of Erin. That tenders, be invited forthwith for the train rails required. That the Tramways and Electricity Committee be advised a3 to thi3 committee's decision to commence the track work and call tenders for rails, in order that the Tramways Committee mar take steps to seeuxe the overhead equipment and rolling stock for the proposed extension, which in the track work should he completed in the next financial year, 1922-23. "That Gladstone Road, Parnell, be put in hand at once and completed in macadam, in accordance with plans iind previous authorisation. "That consideration of commencing the work on the remaining streets in the loan schedule be deferred until the foregoing works are completed or well advanced. "That the engineer proceed with urgent drainage work, including the lower level drainage, and report fully as to the drainage works to be undertaken nest year, including the.Gainsborough Estate, Point Chevalier"That the engineer prepare plans for a. crematorium at a site at Waikume'te Cemetery, to cost not more than £3600, the committee to visit and consider the same at its first ordinary sitting Beit year."
