SWIMMING.
•WAITEiIATA CLUB. iSECO>T> CARNIVAL. The second -carnival of the TVartemata Amateur Swimming Club took place in the Tepid Baths last evening. There was a large attendance, and keen interest was manifested in the various events. The star attraction of the programme was the 100 yds championship of Auckland. In the first length of the bath Smith and Envrright were the first to reach the side, but in the turn Champion shot ahead and led in the second lap In the third and final length Champion was still in the lead, but closely followed toy Murrell, who got in flrst by a smart touch. Enwright, the ~S.Z. lOOyde champion, was just behind, third. The time was Sis. The 440 yds club handicap also created a great deal of interest, and •proved an exciting race. Cunnold, on scratch, swam a good racp, but only got third pla-ce, Enwright, with 15a concession, touching the rope first, and Fairgray. with Us, getting second. The tinal of the ladies' handicap of C 6 2-:Jyds was another hot contest, in which Miss l>. Hoeft just beat Miss V. Walrond for flrst honours. Miss lloeft's time of Sis is the fastest lady's time fnr this distance in the Dominion. During the evening an exhibition of diving was given by several nien:,bors of the Waitemata Club. A gold medal was presented to Miss 'i'iri I'age by the president of the Auckland Swimming Centre, Mr. A. J. Fernandez, for successfully competing in a swimming event in connection with the recent picnic of the Victoria Cruising Clulj. The Ponsonby Cadrt Brass Hand was in attendance, and gave a imin'her of musical selections. A cnlieclion was taken up in aid of instrument*. :ind funds for a coming tiip of the band.
