DEATH OF BISHOP NEVILL.
EX-PRIMATE OF NEW ZEALAND IN EIGHTY-FIFTH YEAR. FIFTEEN YEARS PRIMATE. (By Tclosraph.—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, this day. Bishop Nevill, ex-Primate of New Zealand, died at 7.30 this morning. He was consecrated Bishop of Dunedin in IS7I, and. retired in !!)!!>.
The Most Rev. Samuel Tarrat Nevill, D.U., Bishop of Dunedin, and Primate of New Zealand, was a son of the late Mr. Jonathan Nevill. of Nottingham. He was born in 18117 in Nottingham, and was educated there at the University College. Thence he proceeded to .Magdalene College, Cambridge, where lie gained second class honours in Ihe National Science Tripos, graduated II.A. in ISO 2, and M.A. in 1805. Dr. Nevill was orgained in ISO!! bv the Bishop of Chester, and had sole charge of Scarisbrook, Lancashire, until the following year, when be was appointed to the parish of Slielton, Staffordshire, where lie remained until 1871. Jn that year he came out to New Zealand, and soon after his arrival was appointed Bishop of Dunedin. In 1572 the Cambridge Universitv conferred on him the degree of Doctor of l\ : vinity. Bishop Nevill, who was the senVr prelate in Australasia, hail done much good work in his diocese, and it was mainly due to his efforts that the Selwyn Theological College. _ was built and opened in ISS.j. St. Hilda's College, for the higher education of .'iris, also owed its origin io him. as I well as tile Deaconesses Institute and establishment of the Cathedral. He was a well known writer of sermons on theology, and interested in scientific subjects. Bishop Nevill attended many I meetings of the Lambeth C onferenco. lie became Primate of New Zealand at a meeting of the Kener.il Synod held in Auckland in February. 1001. his predecessor in that olV.ce having been Bishop Cowic of Auckland. Bishop Nevill married a daughter of the late Mr. .Tames Parker Rcnny, of lTcavitrcc. Kxcter, England.
