BERLIN'S ANSWER TO MONARCHIST INTRIGUES
A great demonstration took place in the Lustgarten in Berlin a few days after the murder of Herr Erzberger, to condemn the crime and to support the German Republic against Monarchist reaction. The crowd was the largest on record, and was remarkable for its orderliness and unanimity. All sections of public- opinion-^,., the Centre party, the Democrats, and even the Communists—joined the Socialists on this occasion, and the blue, yellow and red Republican flag was almost as much in evidence as the red Hag of Socialism. Usually it is seldom seen, and its prevalence showed
that it is becoming regarded as a symbol worth fighting for. Many processions converged into the vast assemblage, and at the call of a bugle numerous speakers began to harangue the crowd from steps, parapets, plinths, or improvised platforms.. Another bugle call was the signal for reading a strongly-worded resolution in favour of maintaining the'-Republic, which was greeted-with -a roar of acclamation. The photograph shows on the left the National Monument and on the right the Palace.- The German Government took further measures against the anti-Republicans by forbidding
the wearing of military uniform, except by the Reichswehr or under special permission. They also temporarily suspended a number of reactionary newspapers. The usual Nationalist celebrations on-the anniversary of Sedan (September 2) were prohibitea. The Chancellor, Dr. Wirtli, said in a speech on that flay that, it civil war arose in Germany, he would be on the side of tne working man. The crisis caused strained relations between the Berlin. Government and Bavaria, where there are elements threatening the Republican Constitution.
