THE LABOUR DAY CELEBRATION.
Xo one with a regard to truth can state that the Auckland unionists or Monday last were spoilt children of forJune, for the weather literally put a damper on the results of months of preparation. Notwithstanding the ind and rain squall:;, the procession was one of-the best ever held in Auckland. Ihc working displays were good, and tlk union members turned out well. The whole affair was over a mile long, and 1 timed it as taking 40 minutes to pass the spot where I was standing. It was a credit to the committee: and officials Thanks to-the liberality of tho citizens brought out by a thorough canvass ol the. city, the prize fund was assured al the outset; it only needed a. fine day with its thousands of spectators in the Cricket Ground, to ensure a big surplus being devoted to the Trades Hall Debt Liquidation Fund; but the fates were unkind, and the sum of £160 representee the takings at the gates, instead of £50( or'more. A wet day made all the difference.
