PILFERING ON THE WHARVES.

(To tbe Editor.) Sir, —Will you permit mc a small space to protest against tbe Rev. Mr. Oowie's suggestion of searching all wharf-workers. It is not right that any honest man should be treated as though Tie were a thief and unjust that he should be searched. What is to prevent others from placing articles m his pocket or lunoh-bag to vent a spite or to divert suspicion from themselves. If our ministers would preach the gospel, and make Christian men and women. and leave the political and commercial life of our country to our statesmen, they would do more good. A Christian man cannot steal: his conscience prevents it. Remedy: Make all Christians. How? By preaching the Gospel. But how often dc we listen in church to discourses on social reforms, evils of theatre-jroing, dancing women's dress, long financial statements of foreign missions, and the like, all fit subjects for week-day discussion. But we hear little of the love of God or of the Blood of Jesus, which taketh away the sins of the world. —I am, etc., COUNTRY READER.
