The speaker introduced his subject by stating that the teacher is the moulder of literary taste and the guide to reading, and although individual preference is the final test of what is read, yet there are certain principles to follow in criticising a book which will help one's judgment of it. (1) What end has the author in view? (2) Is the goal worth while? (3) Are the means he uses adequate to realise his purpose? (4) Is the book true? Does it give a false view of life? The worst novels and pictures are those that lead young people to expect more of life than lifo can give. Mr. Shaw expressed his opinion that a greater number of writers of high ability existed to-day than at any other period, and that tho great danger at the present time is not the pessimist, but the shallow optimist and the vapid sentimentalist.
