HUNGARIA AGGRESSIVE
ON AUSTRIAN FRONTIER. NOTE FROM THE ALLIES. (By Ctble.— Press Aesoetatton.-'Oapyrisfot.) (Hceelred 10.30 a.m.) BUDAPEST, September 7. An Alliod Note presented te tho Oovoniment demands tliat Hungary aha.ll [ energetically obeervo the provisions of tho Trianon Treaty. Tho Note plat«» tho rcuponslbility for recent ovents In Western Hungary on tlio Government, whose reply will disclaim responsibility an/I lilumo this Insurgent.*-..— (A, aiul >".Z. Cable.) The Treaty of Trianon, which made peace between the Allies and Hungary, was nitlliud In .July, and Mure its ratification efforts have been nmdu to venire j I from Hungary tho settlement of aeveral i ] outstanding qucetlons. Tho principal ! 'of these relates to the German oeun- I i lien of Western Hungary, which under j j the Treaties of St. Germain ond Trianon I were assigned to Austria, There has feren a growing reluctance on the part ' of certain clrolea In Hungary, partlcu- j lariy the Military and Monarchist ' groupa, to dceept the decision and a , desire to elude Hungarian obligations and seize these territories, and to ask for delay, pending an arrangement with Austria has been manifested. While the j . Allied Governments have no opposition i Ito an amicable settlement between J Austria and Hungary, this could only be arrived at on tlie basis of the territories in question being considered as legally Austrian, and mu~; depend on the Austrian Government being recognised as i the legal owner. Arrangements have ! . been made fur an Allied Military Com- ' I mission to effect the transfer of these ! territories, but (he Hungarians have I f-hown no disposition to aesist. Instead,' they have crossed tho treaty frontier,! and taken forcible possession of ni lea.-t one village. This has been the wnrk of the I Royalist forces under Colonel I.char, ' but the Allies have now notified the | Hungarian Government that, it will }>c I lipl<l responsible. At present the Allied troops in tho area number only about 300, but there will bo littln difficulty in increasing the force if the Hungarians prove intractable, There are evidences 1 foreshadowing a fresh attempt by Karl jof Hapsbnrg to regain the Hungarian ! throne. The outburst of Magyar Chauvinism which may lie expected in connection with the Allies' demand for the immediate transfer to Austria of the ' Western Comitats of Hungary may act las a stimulus to the Legitimists. The Austrian Government, however, may 'bo i relied upon to take vigorous preeau- : tionary measures to prevent Karl from I recrossing its territory —measures similar to those already taken to prevent a similar passage by tho ex-Czar ierdinand of Bulgaria.
