TAUMARUNUI LIQUOR CASE.
rXDICTMEKT QUASHED. (By Telojrapli.—Own Correspondent.) HAMILTON, this day. At the last fitting of the Supreme Court, Hamilton, a true bill was found against Elsie Coffey and Thomas Tuohy, of Taumarunui, on charges connected ■with the sale of liquor in a proclaimed area. Both accused had previously elected to go to the Ptipremc Court, as they were entitled to do so after a second convictior nad been recorded against them. The case was postponed last session to permit of an appeal being heard from the second conviction. The appeal was upheld, thus rendering them ineligible for trial by jury, as there was then no second conviction.
At the Supreme Court yesterday Mr. H. T. Gillies (Crown Solicitor) said he had ascertained that the judge had power to quash the indictment at his discretion without counsel for the accused having to move in this direction.
His Honor accordingly quashed the indictment.
