(To the Editor.) Sir,—The valuable recommendation by the Rev. Mr. Cowio that all wharf workers should submit to a search by experienced officials is a splendid measure, and one that is long overdue. Honest and patriotic workers would have no objection, thus removing a deserved stigma (due to the few) that affects all. The present time is opportune for bringing in reforms for management and discipline on our wharves. The extremists who for some considerable time have exercised altogether too much eway in proportion to -their numbers are now thankfully fairly conspicuous by their absence. Their go-slow service," cacanny, is in less demand, more efficient labour is offering, and thus our waterfronts and the workers' waiting-rootn will not resound so much as formerly to their strident and raucous appeals to class consciousness and sedition. Jn i conclusion, labour is now in a more I amenable and equable frame of mindthe folly of strikes in England lists proved to the sensible section (who are in the majority) U»t strikes and lock-outs are costly and get nowhere, destroying industry and preventing the investment of capital, without which important factor industry cannot function, and consequently employment is lacking. Sane and honest unionism will now be able to assert itself, the disloyalists having flitted probably to the Mecca of the Marxians, Lenin's Land, and where, upon a diet of black bread and little else, they will bi- free to ar:riie Socialism till further orders—from Trotsky, the military dictator. As a wharf worker I am glad Mr. ( owie has brought forward publicly this suggestion, and I would cheerfully acquiesce in its enforcement.—l am, etc" LOYALIST WHARF WORKER. '
