NORTHCOTE COUNCIL CONTEST.

MR. F. O. DEVLIN ELECTED. . Considerable interest was taken locally in the contest yesterday for the Taoant seat in the Nortihcote Borough Council, Mr. Kinnear Smith having resigned. Six hmdired and six voters registered their choice at the ballot-box, which exceeds the total number polled In April (582), when the -Whole of the | eeats on the council -were contested, as ■well as the mayoral, Harbour Board and * Hospital Board elections. The candidates were: Mr. Fred. Osmond Devlin, secretary of the local Fire Brigade, and Mr. Chas. A. Deuxberry, ■who served on the Northoote Council for about nine months until April last, when he unsuccessfully contested the Mayoralty with Mt. W. E. Richardson. Solid support was accorded to Mr. Devlin (whose war service -was for 44 years) by the Nortihcote returned soldiers, who worked very actively on his behalf, and secured bis victory by the good majority of 114 votes. There were no informal votes. The voting resulted:— Mt. F. O. Devlin 360 Mr. C. A. Deuxberry 24G Majority for Mr. Devlin 114 After the declaration of the poll by the returning officer, Mr. H. W. WSleon, Mr. Devlin was installed into office at a full meeting of the council, which then adjourned till this evening the usual monthly business.'
