LARGF AMOUNTS PAH). LONDON, August 20. A phenomenal football season is anticipated. It will op.-n on August 28. The leading clubs have surpassed all records in the sums paid for the transfer of single players. Four thousand pounds ha.s been a common sum. In instances £5,000 has been offered and refused, and some clubs have pet the value of a player in the region of £6,000 —for instance, McMullan, the international half-back, who is playing for Partick Thistle. The wealthy Everton's new team, it is estimated, has cost £30,000. The players do not share in bonuses. The most" highly paid player receives a maximum of £10 a week.
