ARMAMENTS CONGRESS.

j PROBLEM OF KOREA. ' WASHINGTON, August. 2!>. The forthcoming conference on armaments continues to be the. subject of interesting development*. The National Catholic Welfare I ouncil has announced that the Pope approves of the conference, and ha." revealed that the I'ope's peace note in Aupiist, i!H7. proposed the status quo ante helium and disarmament. .Mr. Wilson's reply was so discouraging that thr Pope did not publish, as he intended, a detailed programme for disarmam.nt. Dr. Rhee, head of the so-called Republic of Korea, announced that he will bring before the conference the question of Korean independence. It is thought-that Dr. Rhee's possible, action will prove decidedly embarrassing to ihe Japanese delegates. Sir. Samuel GomptTß has announced that if Labour is represented at the conference ho will suggest that the Labour members, of the delegations hold a separate convention to discuss important international Labour questions.— (A. and X.Z.
