UNHAPPY HELIGOLAND.
NO LOVE FOR GERMANY. LONDON. August 10. The Berlin correspondent of the "Daily Chronicle" reports that the inhabitants of Heligoland intend appealing to the League of Nations for independence. In a memorial issued to the German public they state that conditions were satisfactory until the British handed over the island to Germany. The inhabitants were then unhappy. When the islanders returned after the armistice they found conditions unhappier still. Their homes were spoiled, and their industries ruined. New taxation has been introduced,' and Gorman police and workmen have arrived, and ate importins chaos.— (A. and N.Z. Cable.)
