MERCANTILE WAR MEDALS.
(By Telegraph.—.Press Association.) WELLINGTON. Wednesday. During tlie war the men of the mercantile marine rendered magnificent service, and this work lias been recognised by the is = ue of special mercantile marine medals. For some time the authorities have been issuing ribbons, but as yet no medals have come to hand. They are now being distributed in Australia.* however, and it is probable they will arrive in New Zealand shortly.
Tlie mercantile marine medal i- of bronze, with the Kings head on one side, and on the other a steamer going full steam ahead. Beneath the vessel are the words, -For war ' service—mercantile marine, 1914-1318."' The ribbon is rea, white and preen. the colours being arranged vertically like the navigation lights of a merchant vessel under way. This is the lir.-t decoration specially awarded to the mercantile marine. The transport medal given for service in the South African and China wars was awarded only to officers serving under special e-.igigement on troopships.
