FOE TRAINING COLLEGE,

OX EDEN-EPSOM RESERVE.

COUNCIL APPROVES.

The Mayor, Mr. J. AY. Shackelford explained in connection with the proposal that some years ago it was suggested that the ground should be ta_en by the Government as a site for a Uni%crsily College, but recently Mr. Parr suggested that the council should offer him the reserve as a site for a training college. The buildings and ground would necessitate considerable expenditure. Mr. Shackelford then went on to refer to matters pertaining to the control of the reserve, showing that the reserve was likely to remain under Mount Kden and" the city. He suggested that tlie council would recognise tlie importance of taking a liberal nnd generous view of this proposal, and, in conjunction with the city, consider the advisability of acceding to the Minister's request. "Tlie Mayor of Auckland had agreed to the advisability of having a certain proportion of the reserve on which some money had been spent in making it suitable for hockey, cricket and other games, invested in the borough. The matter was discussed in committee, the council agreeing to accede to the request of the Miaister, subject to a certain portion of the reserve being retained for a recreation ground for young people. Also is was decided to congratulate Mr. Parr upon having brought forward a handsome solution of a difficult problem
