ARBITRATION AWARD.

HIGHER WAGES GRANTED.

IN TWO INDUSTRIES.

Two awards have been filed at the Arbitration Court. That dealing with the Northern Industrial District flourmills' (Bycroft, Ltd.. and the Northern Roller MiUing Company) employees, contains, inter alia, the following terms:— The hours of work to be eight daily, in shifts, men on the day shift being allowed reasonable time for meals, and in no case shall a man be worked for more than five hours continuously without an interval for a meal. By mutual agreement time lost by the weekly halfholiday may be made up by overtime, not exceeding two hours daily. Where the mills and stores work one and two shifts, a weekly half-holiday to begiven, work to cease at noon. Provision is made so that jackmen shall be relieved during meal hours, the number of jackmen to be as follows: —Mills taking off the jaeker up to twelve sacks per hour, one jackerman; over twelve sacks and up to twenty, two jackermen; over twenty sacks and up to thirty, three jackermen; a jackerman shall be employed in all mills with a capacity of six sacks and over. Under the general conditions an employer is empowered to employ a man on combined duties provided he is paid the higher rate of wages for such work, -while so employed. Men relieving each other on shift work by consent of the employer shall not be entitled to overtime rates.

The new schedule of wages, to which is added a bonus of 3Jd per hour, shows an increase to rollermen or shift miller, oatmeal and 'barley miller, of 2d per hour; purifier, smutterman, assistant smutterman and kilnman ld; head storeman, lid; assistant storeman, Jd; jackerman, I*d; all others Id. Workers on afternoon and night shifts to receive 1/ per shift additional; enginedrivers ft> receive the wages prescribed by the award obtaining in the district. Boys:—First year, £15/; second, £1 10/; third £2; fourth, £2 10/; fifth £3.

Theaward, as regards -wa_es comes into force as from March 1921, and asto other conditions from July 5, 1921, and shall remain in force until March 31, 11)23.

AERATED WATER TRADE. The award in the dispute between the Auckland aerated water, condiment, preserve, biscuit, confectionery and drug factories' employees and their employers, embodies, without alteration, the re* commendations of the Conciliation Council, which the parties agreed to accept. As regards wages, the award will run from April 29, 1921, and as to other terms, from June 30. 1921, and will continue until April 29, 1923. Wa»esCordial makers, £4 11/6 per week, (formerly £3 -9/6); machine bottlers, £4 4/6 (£3 2/6); bottle-washers and general hands, £4 3/6 (£3 1/6). No application to be made either for a reduction or an increase or for a bonus during the currency of the award. Youths, "10-16 years £1 5/ (£1); 16-17 years, £1 10/ (£ls/); IMS years, £1 15/ (£1 5/); 18-20 years, £2 5/ ( £1 10/ and £1 15/); 20-21 years, £3 (£2). A week's holiday on full pay to each worker on completion of a full year's service. Hours of work: November to April inclusive, 4S hours; May to October, 44 hours
