WHAKATANE, this day.

A message received from Waimana this morning stated that a native boy was seriously wounded with a gun. A pajty of pakehas went shooting, and one of them left a gun outside a whare. Two Maori lads found the gun, and began playing with it. The gun went off, seriously injuring one boy, necessitating his removal to the Opotiki Hospital in a serious condition.

A later telegram stated that the boys, named Te Hama (12) and Taha (T), were playing with a shotgun. Taha pointed the gun at Te Hama, when the gun exploded, killing Te Hama and the "kick" injuring Taha. An, inquest is being held.
