LOTTERIES.
A STATE MONOPOLY.
SYDNEY, June 24.
The State Ministers, eagerly studying' every possible source of revenue, have for some time had their eye« upon the huge sums which are subscribed in this State for lotteries and art unions. Hundreds of thousands of pounds are regularly sent away to Tasmania for "Tattcrsoll'e Consultations," and to Brisbane for the Queensland State lottery, "The Golden Casket."
Cabinet has practically decided to introduce legislation next session to establish a New South Wales State lottery, and also to make it illegal for persons in this State to subscribe money to lotteries in other States. Steps will also be taken to discourage the "srS union" idea, which has grown so much in recent months that it practically represents the springing up of many little lotteries all over the State.
The Government hopes thus to establish a monopoly in lotteries, and to reap so much in profits from the State lottery that it will be able to meet at least a portion of the cost of the expensive, Motherhood Endowment scheme.
