OBITUARY.

HON. C. E. DAVIE?, M.E.C. Recent cables announced the sudden death of tbe Hon- C. E. Davies. M.E.C. managing director of tbe "Hobart Mercury." The "Mercury" sayst —The Hon. C. E. Davies, MX.C, had a long and useful career as a citizen, journalist, sportsman, and public man. Throughout bis long and active life he proved himself to be a man of high principle, integrity, and ability; one who set before himself a high standard of social and public duty, and who never wavered in his efforts to make his life square with it. Courteous, refined, considerate, and generous, yet a man with the courage of his opinions, and well able to express them, uniting a manysided character with true earnestness of purpose, he rendered good service to the Stnte. As sole controlling and managing proprietor of these papers for nearly fifty years, he was often complimented upon the prestige the "Mercury" especiilly has gained among the leading metropolitan journals of Australia. The late Mr. Davies was well-known in racing circles, and was a prominent Freemason. In nearly every prominent movement in the. State the support and influence of Mr. Davies were called into requisition- He was esteemed for his public spirit and philanthropy, his hospitality, his tact, sound judgment, and integrity. Few men were better known nnd more deservedly respected in Tasmania. Mr. Davies recently visited the Press Congress in Canada, and visited Auckland on his return. Pressmen throughout New Zealand, not a few of whom have at some period of their nareer done service on the "Mercury.'" •vill join in the general regret manifested at the passing of a unique figure in Australasian journalism.
