ANNUAL PRESENTATION. \ THE SUCCESSFUL SCITOOLS. { The annual presentation of trophies • to the winners of the primary school | grade matches took place at Victoria I I'ark this morning. Mr. 11. S. W. King, Mayor of Devonport and acting-chair- I man of the Education Board presided j over a large gathering of school boys. 1 In the course of his remarks Mr. King stressed the important part that school cricket was playing in the development of character, and gave it as his opinion that the work of the boys on the playing fields was as important iv its results as their work in the schoolroom. He deplored the lack of interest of the general public in school cricket, saying that fewrealised that thirty-four school teams, j comprising '174 boys, played on the various sports grounds every Saturday Illuming, and that these were the sure foundation of the game in the higher grades. Xfr. King's remark that ('ovoj-nment subsidies should he granted to provide sports equipment for the schools was I received with applause, and his young heaters were enjoined to inspire their i parents to keep this in view at election time. Reference was also made to the unselfish devotion of Auckland teachers to school cricket, as evidenced by the hours they spent in coaching and umpiring for the hoys. The chairman, in presenting the trophies, suggested that they he displayed in a prominent place in the schoolroom, where they would be a continual reminder to the boys of the prowess of their school: and not hidden away in musty cupboards until the next presentation. The feat of winning its grade in its lirst year of competition was performed by the recently-opened Vauxliall school. Its success was particularly gratifying to the speaker, who live 3 in the district, and takes a keen interest in the welfare of the school. The winning teams for the year 1920 were as follows:—A grade. Vermont Street: B grade, Ponsonby; C grade, Beresford Street: 1) grade. Vauxhall: junior competition. Devonport. Beresford Street school will hold the Ballin Challenge Cup for the ensuing year. A letter was read from .Mr. C. W. Ciarrard, senior inspector of schools, himself an old representative cricketer, conveying the congratulations of the inspectors to the winning teams, and thanks to the teachers for their continued interest ill the welfare of the boys. i Before proceeding to the wickets the hoys gave hearty cheers for Mr. King,! the winning teams and the officials of the!
