ARBITRATION CASES.

EMPLOYING NON-UNIONISTS. A case came before Mr. J. W. Povnton. S.M., ot the Magistrate's Conrt In which rhe Auckland Plasterers' Union (Mr. A. E. Skelton) claimed a penalty of £10 from Leman Brothers (Mr. Bagna.l) for an alleged breach of an award by having employed two non-unionists and failing to notify the fact to the secretary of the union within three days. This case was dealt with some time ago. but by consent was reinstated and a freeh hearing allowed. In the Interim an Interpretation was obtained from the Arbitration Court on a point raised. Mr. Bagnall. for the defence, stated that the men informed Mr. Leman that they had made application for admission to the Plasterers' Union. Mr. Skelton pointed ont that *lt was proved conclusively that defendants were non-unionists at the time they were employed, and It was tbe duty of the em--1 ployer to give notice within three days to I the union. A penalty of £2 was Imposed, costs £4 11/ being allowed. A CASE DISMISSED. Another case that came before Mr. Poynton was brought by the Inspector of Awards against Miss Caroline Gleeson. proprietress or" Hlnemoa House. Alfred Street. Mr. G. Laghtfoot appeared for the Department and Mr. A. E. Skelton for the defence. It was claimed that defendant employed a Mrs. Peterson as a general hand and paid her 35/ per week instead of 35/ plus 8/ per week, as provided by the award. Inspector Kennedy gave evidence in support of the claim" for a penalty of £10. Miss Gleeson said she employed Mrs. Peterson as working housekeeper. She had not been out before, and stayed at Hinemoa House three months. Later witness pui Mrs. Peterson on to relieve the housemaids. On one occasion Mrs. Peterson did the washing, but not with the consent of witness. She was allowed to nse the drawing room and was waited upon at the table. Mr. Poynton said a general hand was one who had to do ererything in a house. This case was just on the boundary line, but he would give Miss Gleeson the benefit of the doubt and dismiss the case.
